About Vimart Signwriting & Martyn

Vimart Signwriting was borne out of the need to produce liveries for a number of coach companies in the South East London area. Working on their vehicles at weekends meant I was working every single day, so in the summer of 1978 I founded Vimart Signwriting. Mostly working in South East London the work I took on soon progressed to other areas of the capital and beyond hence Vimart Signwriting became established over a wider area. My projects have taken me to all parts of the country and now I am settled in the North-West although I still maintain active projects in other parts of the country, especially London. A lot of work is concerned with canal boats though Vimart Signwriting still has its foundation in general signage.

After leaving school in the summer of 1973 I underwent an apprenticeship with a well known company, Bradfords Studio T/A the Lettering Centre based near to London Bridge in south east London. Here, within a business that included work for the Department of Environment (as was) and many worshipful companies within the City of London I learnt traditional techniques concerning heraldry, gold leaf work, lettering and general signwriting. This helped me develop a precise execution of lettering and layout. The apprenticeship finished in 1977. For another year I developed further by working at Lorman and Greenway in New Cross, south east London where larger freestyle work was carried out to a great extent on pub signs and advertising boards at football grounds and other stadia.
